If you’re looking for the best things to do in San Diego this April with kids, this is one of the sweetest months to get out and explore. Spring is in full swing, the weather is usually beautiful, and there are so many fun ways to make the most of the season as a family. From strawberry picking in Carlsbad and Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Safari Park to Disney On Ice, Belmont Park, and Padres games, April in San Diego is packed with family-friendly fun.
As a local mom, April always feels like the month where San Diego really shows off. Everything starts to feel brighter, outdoor plans are easier, and there are so many spring activities that are actually fun for both kids and parents.
Here are some of the best family-friendly things to do in San Diego in April.
One of the most magical April events in San Diego for kids is Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Safari Park. This seasonal experience is such a fun one for families, especially if your kids love animals, nature, or anything interactive. Walking through a butterfly habitat surrounded by hundreds of butterflies feels like such a special spring outing, and it’s one of those San Diego activities that really stands out this time of year.
This is a great pick for preschoolers, elementary-aged kids, and honestly adults too. It feels educational, beautiful, and memorable all at once. Admission is required on-top of Safari Park entry, and costs $18/pp.

If you’re looking for a classic kid-friendly San Diego activity, the Balboa Park Carousel is always a good idea. It’s simple, nostalgic, and easy to pair with a bigger day in Balboa Park. You can ride the carousel, walk around the park, visit a museum, stop at a playground, or just enjoy a slower spring morning outside.
For local families, this is one of those outings that works when you want to get out of the house without planning a huge day. It’s especially great for younger kids.

Spring is such a fun time to visit Belmont Park, and if you’re looking for things to do in Mission Beach with kids this April, this is an easy one to add to your list. Belmont Park gives you that classic San Diego boardwalk feel with rides, treats, ocean views, and just enough activity to make it feel exciting without being too overwhelming.
It’s a great family outing if you want something festive and fun, especially for kids who love rides and a little extra energy. Bonus points, it’s way less busy before summer kicks off!

If your kids are in a Disney phase, Disney On Ice in San Diego is definitely one of the big family events to know about this month. This is the kind of outing that feels extra exciting and a little more special, especially if you’re looking for an event to build your weekend around.
Between the music, familiar characters, and live performance energy, it’s easy to see why this is such a popular spring event for families.

You really can’t make a list of April things to do in San Diego with kids without including strawberry picking in Carlsbad. This is one of the best spring activities for families and such a fun seasonal tradition. Kids love the novelty of picking their own strawberries, and parents love that it’s outdoors, cute, and easy to turn into a full North County day.
This is one of my favorite kinds of San Diego family outings because it feels simple in the best way. Fresh air, a seasonal activity, and a bucket list kind of spring memory.

Baseball season is back, which makes going to a Padres game with kids one of the best family activities in San Diego this time of year. Even if your kids are not huge baseball fans yet, the snacks, stadium energy, downtown atmosphere, and overall experience can make this such a fun outing.
A Padres game is a great option for a weekend plan, especially if you want something that feels very San Diego. It’s also an easy one to build into a family day downtown. We always go Sunday home games so we can enjoy Kids Fest before the game – it’s so much fun and definitely a highlight for the girls!

If you’re ready to lean into the warmer weather, LEGOLAND Water Park is another fun April option for families. This is especially great for kids who already love LEGOLAND and are excited for a more active day with water play and slides.
For families in San Diego, this is one of those outings that can easily fill an entire day and work really well for spring break, weekends, or a special family day. Admission into LEGOLAND itself AND LEGOLAND Waterpark are required to go into the Water Park!
If you’re looking for a slower-paced San Diego family day trip idea, April is a great time to plan a Sunday in Encinitas. Whether that means beach time, a family walk, grabbing breakfast, checking out a local event, or just spending time outside, Encinitas is one of those spots that feels especially good in the spring.
This is a great reminder that not every April outing has to be a ticketed event. Sometimes the best family days are the simpler ones.
April is one of my favorite months for family fun in San Diego, and this list is such a good reminder of how much there is to do this time of year. If you have a favorite April tradition, spring outing, or family event in San Diego, leave it in the comments so we can all add more ideas to our list.
